Sustainable Gift Guide

There’s no sustainable consumption under capitalism, yada yada yada, yeah I know. I know, okay? But I still want to gift my friends nice things! And some of us are not as talented in the arts; I can’t bestow glazed mugs for birthdays and depthful oil portraits for Christmas like some of you can.

My strategy for gifting, or lack-thereof, is thinking the gift will just really speak to me while I’m out-and-about. If I keep my eyes sharp throughout the year, I can accumulate a nice pile of presents for each of my loved ones. I like gifting things that my people wouldn’t normally buy for themselves- whether it’s something ridiculously luxurious, or a useful investment to make the day-to-day easier.

These gift ideas are good for the planet and your wallet. Without further adieu, these are my suggestions for a more conscious Christmas (or Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, or any celebration).

  1. Tie-dye kit

Curate an all-natural tie-dye kit with flowers, spices, fruits and vegetables. Throw in a pair of bamboo socks, a bandana, or a comfy cotton-tee to experiment on.

  2.  Hemp face wipes

This is a cute take on sustainable and practical. They’ll think of you every night before bed!

  3. Thrifted ceramic pieces

Make a flower arrangement with a funky vase as the centerpiece.

  4. Plants

It’s always good to be surrounded by living things.

  5. A used book

For the reader in your life. If you can find your favorite, great!

  6. Picture frame with a photo of y’all inside

It feels so good to walk into a home and see your friendship physically represented.

  7. Art piece by a local artist

Check out the various holiday markets around town, or splurge at the business you do your best window-shopping at.

  8. Experience

At the risk of sounding cliché, memories last longer than any material object. Think dance lesson, cooking class, hot air balloon ride, or a museum date!
